Common Connection

Volume 4, Number 6: May 1, 2004

This archived newsletter is from Harbinger Partners, before it
joined forces with the Corporate Volunteer Network to become Common Impact.

We are impressed by the thoughtfulness of [the Harbinger Partners] model, making sure to educate nonprofits about the importance of technology and how it can be used in support of their missions. In addition, we appreciate their commitment to providing high quality services to the nonprofit organizations with which they work. Too often nonprofits suffer from unprofessional resources because they cannot afford to pay market rates. Harbinger Partners goes a long way to counter this trend vis-à-vis technology.

-- Christopher Gabrieli, Chairman of the Boston After-School for All Partnership, and Lisa Jackson, formerly the Project Director of Boston's After School Enterprise

Strategic Teams for Technology: New Program, New Partners

We are so pleased to announce our second program, Strategic Teams for Technology! This program brings together a collection of nonprofits working around a similar issue area -- in the pilot year, we are excited to work with 12 organizations providing activities for children in the after-school time. We will bring these after-school programs together to understand their technology needs, individually and as a sector, and to propose potential technology solutions that could meet those shared needs.

We feel lucky to note that our partner in this endeavor is the Boston After-School for All Partnership, who will help us identify potential participants and think about ways in which our work can serve the children of Boston.

Our Technology Pioneers: An Update on Progress to Date

Looking for a Few Good Nonprofits...

Well, we've just released another request for applications to our Technology Pioneers Program. So spread the word, head to http://www.harbingerpartners.org/go/tpp/apply/ to get your copy of the materials, attend our info session (see below), and we'll look forward to announcing the next great pool of nonprofits at the end of the summer!

...And People Who Like Free Food

Would you like to learn more about our programs? If so, come to our info session at 9:00 am on Tuesday, June 15 at The Boston Foundation! We'll have staff members and former participants on hand to tell you about the program, along with program applications and lots of yummy food. Please RSVP to Katie Wang at kwang@harbingerpartners.org to receive further details about this event and to help us know how many people to expect!

Thank You, Companies!

Volunteers from BEA Systems, Cisco Systems, State Street Corporation, and a major financial institution in Boston have been hard at work as they've begun their projects with our fall nonprofits. Before long, our nonprofits will have received a new website, a new network, and three new databases thanks to the generosity of our companies!

Many Thanks

Thank you, thank you, and a thousand times more we thank you. Once again, Harbinger Partners is blessed with dear friends who help us all do good, just a little bit better. Specifically, hats off to:

The Cisco Foundation, for a $15,000 grant, and the State Street Foundation, for a generous $10,000 grant, both in support of the Technology Pioneers Program. Not only do State Street Corporation and Cisco Systems encourage their employees to volunteer their skills through our programs, but their foundations see fit to support us as well! We count ourselves lucky to partner with companies that are motivated to do such good.

Diana Marsh, a talented graphic designer in New York City who is putting her skills to work on our behalf, designing some marketing materials for us. Take a look at her work here: http://www.naiaddesign.com/.

What's News...

June 30th marks the end of our fiscal year -- that means the next newsletter will be packed with the names of all our friends that have made donations. Please e-mail Katie at kwang@harbingerpartners.org if you wish to remain anonymous.

There's still time to make the list! It is through the support of individuals like you that Harbinger Partners can continue its work of leveraging resources through cross-sector relationships, building nonprofit capacity, and strengthening corporate philanthropy. Watch your mail for our spring appeal or make a gift online at http://www.harbingerpartners.org/go/donate/.

Best of the Web

For this month, we refer you to the website of the Boston After-School for All Enterprise, http://www.afterschoolforall.org/, so that you can learn more about the critical need for after-school programming in our community. The website is jam-packed with resources for parents, after-school providers, advocates, and more. The research they've put together on the progress, need, and demand for after-school programming is particularly compelling -- please check it out!
